I was in Melbourne during the week (for the launch of the VROOM virtual reality installation at Melbourne Museum) - and came across this demonstration as I walked through the rainy city on Thursday afternoon. Panorama,  The target of this protest was Amanda Vanstone who has taken over from the sepulchral Philip Ruddock as Federal Minister for Immigration. She has been busy for the last few days being "tough" for the media -- disclaiming any reponsibility for events at Australia's offshore detention camps at Nauru (35 of the detainees there are currently on hunger strike and some of the hunger strikers have sewn their lips together). The Minister's website is remarkable for the number of images it has of various detention facilities .. like these of Villawood, the detention centre in Sydney .. photo photo photo. Villawood is made to sound like a luxury motel in some of the blurb .."lovely oil prints on the walls"

Thousands of Jehovah Witnesses are in town for a big Convention at Olympic Park.  Part of the action today was this mass baptism ceremony - panorama. This venue, once known as Olympic Stadium - built for the Olympics for the opening/closing ceremonies, athletics etc - is now called Telstra Stadium (following the universal practice in Sydney these days of selling off corporate naming rights for major sporting venues).

Here an "aerial" view of the Reading Room of the Mitchell Library yesterday. Panorama.  This is the older section of the NSW State Library -  the Reading Room had a major refurbishment a couple of years ago.
