Tuesday I went up to Hervey Bay in Queensland to do some aerial photography. This picture for instance shows the Bay with Fraser Island (world's largest sand island) visible on the right on the horizon. Hervey Bay is now a major ecotourism destination. The whale watching season starts there in a few weeks. Some decades back big game fishing was a major attraction -- and Vic Hislop's Shark Show ... panorama ... celebrates that as being socially responsible ... with regard to sharks at least. (They are whale as well as people killers according to him).

Here is a panorama from the Winter Magic Festival in Katoomba yesterday. The festival with its  fantasy costume carnival parade is held each year on the Saturday nearest the winter solstice. The building in background here is the Carrington  Hotel -- restored to period glory in very authentic fashion in recent years. Katoomba is in the mountains near Sydney -- it snows there occasionally in winter and yesterday while not quite snow weather was still plenty cold  - 6 degrees C.

I was in Melbourne for a few days this week ... my blog .. this blog that is ... is part of a show at ACMI at Federation Square ... with a selection of the panoramas projected on a wall. Tuesday morning I wandered up the river at dawn.  The next day being direly wet and cold  I was going to go picture-going at the National Gallery of Victoria (Australia's best collection I think) when I came across this scene of local art students from the Victorian College of the Arts diving for coins in the pool outside the gallery as a demonstration of the dire straits they will be in when the government (represented by the John Howard piggy bank pink structure) introduces upfront fees.
