This year’s Biennale Artists and Supporters Party at Cockatoo Island — panorama — featured a large installation of “exploding” cars hanging from the roof — by famous Chinese artist Cao Gu0-Quiang.

As part of a food-oriented festival the Sydney Harbour Bridge was laid with turf overnight (real grass!) and 6000 picnickers (who had won a kind of raffle) assembled there for breakfast. Panorama. Loudspeakers with bird noises (kookaburras) augmented the rural feel.

“World’s biggest running event” the official website says — about this mass run this morning from the city to Bondi Beach. You can see about a quarter perhaps of the 75,000 runners — waiting to start — in this panorama. The race starts quite early in the day and it is often chilly — whence the tops you can see discarded on the hedges in the panorama.

A crucifixion reenactment in the city on Good Friday. Panorama. Here is a little movie from earlier on. Movie. The Roman guards used to flay Jesus with whips and Mary used to run up to Jesus and carry on — but the last few years the action has been tamed down some. There is a person however with stage blood in a sauce bottle who discreetly sprays Jesus periodically so he miraculously appears to get bloodier as he procedes down the street.

On the weekend Cockatoo Island was given over to a music festival, All Tomorrow’s Parties — and the turbine hall here was one of the venues. Panorama. This is the same location that was used for the Sydney Biennale opening night party last year. Panorama. The headlining act for the music festival was Nick Cave … panorama .. at dusk. You can see the turbine hall exterior to the right of the stage in this panorama.

New Years Eve fireworks last night by the harbour. Noteworthy this year were amazingly bright coloured spotlight effects and startling strafing sequences of fireworks along the length of the bridge. Panorama.
